1:30 pm - 4:30 pm
Nerstrand Big Woods State Park
9700 170th St E,
Nerstrand, MN 55053
This is a change from the original April date – the cold weather with so many days with snow, sleet, rain, strong winds, etc. seriously retarded spring growth. We will talk a bit about the effects of weather on growth and bloom times.
Our annual walk is planned for the anticipated time when spring flowers carpet the bluff-side woodlands, and resident and migrant birds chatter as they fly around and about.
Come, see what has been, is, or soon will be in bloom. We will walk down to and along Prairie Creek. Usually, but not always, spring ephemeral flowers far outnumber the bird migrants in this remnant of the Big Woods. Bloodroot, hepatica, wild ginger, trout lilies… Woodpeckers, kinglets, creepers, bluebirds… All and more are possible. How far we meander along the creek depends, among other things, on the weather, interest, and water levels.
Meet in the large parking lot inside the entrance of Big Woods State Park.
FEE AREA: A day pass or MN State Park Annual Pass is required.
- Bring a 10-power loupe or borrow one from Chase.
- Consider bringing flower and/or bird field guides.
- Maybe exercise your camera’s macro capabilities.
Take I-35 south from cities to Hwy 19 (east) into Northfield. Turn right (south) onto Hwy 3, go a very short way, then east onto Hwy 246. The road winds and turns a bit, then eventually goes south. Good signs indicate the right turn (west) onto Cty Rd 29 to the entrance to Big Woods State Park.
Easy to Moderate with leisurely descent to Prairie Creek (includes some stairs) and return.
