May 6-8, 2016 (Reservation deadline April 6, 2016)

Many birders are aware that some of the world’s best birding is available right here in Minnesota! During the spring migration one of the best locations to be looking for birds is along the north-south Mississippi and St. Croix River Flyway. Our annual Warbler Weekend is held at the Villa Maria, located on Lake Pepin near Frontenac, right on the flyway!

Our annual weekends over the last 30-40 years have averaged 130-135 species, including an average of 21-24 species of warblers. You may bird by car, on foot at the Villa or relax on the lawn at the Villa. The Chapter’s Field Trip leaders offer bird walks for beginner and more experienced birders. Several locations are always canvassed, including Hok-Si-La (a Lake City Park), Well’s Creek, the State Park’s prairie restoration project behind the Villa, Frontenac State Park, and Sand Point (this site may require knee-high boots due to high water). A Bird Board, located near the cafeteria, records all the sightings over the weekend.

The Villa Maria is a former school and now hosts retreats. The Villa needs registrations 30 days in advance and does not make refunds for any cancellations received after April 8. This weekend has sold out for several years. Please register early. To guarantee sufficient food, the Villa requires meal tickets and a $12 commuter charge for people attending the evening lectures or coming to the meals who are not staying in the Villa overnight. (All room reservations include 3 or 4 meals per person.) Please include an e-mail or enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope for confirmation of your registration and to receive an agenda. Accommodations include dorm-style rooms, shared bathrooms down the hall, and dining at very reasonable prices. Note the early registration deadline of April 6. Please bring shoes or flip flops to wear in the building; muddy shoes from birding the parks are not allowed inside.

New for 2016: For the first time, dinner is available at the Villa on Friday night at 6 p.m. – reservations are required on the enclosed form. Overnight reservations include all Saturday meals but Friday night meals are not included in the room options. Note a new decreased rate for couples sharing a double bed in 2016. Gluten free or vegetarian meals are available – indicate on the reservation form. Camping is available at nearby Frontenac State Park or Hok Si La Park.

Socializing, snacks, coffee and information on Friday night, at 7 p.m., precedes a presentation by Francisco Muñoz on Birding in Nicaragua. Francisco will present many images of Nicaraguan birds as he describes his passion for birds and environmental conservation and tells stories about his numerous efforts to complete censuses of bird species in very difficult conditions. He is the co-author of the new field guide to the birds of Nicaragua (in English and Spanish) and has excellent color plates for the over- 650 species of birds known to occur in Nicaragua.

Viewing Chimney Swifts as they enter the Villa’s chimney at dusk and an owl walk follows the lecture (bring flashlights and dark sweat-shirts!). Saturday evening’s lecture features Monica Bryand. She is working on a project through National and Minnesota Audubon to capture through photos all of the 166 species threatened or endangered by climate change. She currently has photos of over 100 species and will also tell stories of her travels.

Copies of Saint Paul Audubon’s booklet on Native Plants and other brochures will be available.

Registration is on a first-come first-serve basis but with preference given to those staying for the weekend. Note the limited number of accommodations at each level – there are 28 single rooms; 10 rooms with double beds for couples; and 25 rooms with twin beds (including 10 with 3 beds). Thank you for your registration and we look forward to seeing you and to a repeat of a wonderful weekend.
