Urgent: Battle Creek Grassland at Risk

The Battle Creek Grassland

Our campaign to save this 77-acre site adjacent to Battle Creek Regional Park continues. We are working with a coalition that includes Friends of the Mississippi River, Friends of Maplewood Nature, Friends of the Parks and Trails of St. Paul and Ramsey County, and Legacy of Nature Alliance. We will meet with new and returning Ramsey County Board members and county staff to advocate for protection and management of the grassland and its rare and declining bird species.

See our Fact Sheet for background information about the history of this property and its importance for grassland birds, including the Minnesota-endangered Henslow’s Sparrow.

The goal is to protect the grassland as an Environmental Natural Area within Battle Creek Regional Park and, eventually, to make it available as a Birdability site for the passive enjoyment of everyone, including those with physical impairments.

The grassland is within the city of Maplewood and within the district of Ramsey County Commissioner Victoria Reinhardt. Commissioner Reinhardt and Maplewood Mayor Marylee Abrams have expressed their desire to protect the grassland. We need to obtain the support of the other county commissioners.

Please inform your Ramsey County commissioner of the importance of the Battle Creek Grassland. Find your commissioner’s email address by clicking on your location in this map. Please use your own words and identify yourself.

Thank you!
