The highlight of the winter birding season is Saint Paul Auduon Society’s annual Christmas Bird Count. This National Audubon Society event has been collecting data for 110 years and is the longest running bird census of its kind. This event provides valuable data on winter bird populations. Join us for this fun event!
When: Saturday, December 19
Sign Up Deadline: Thursday, December 10th
Who can participate: Anyone from beginning to expert birders
How is it organized: People are assigned to teams containing both expert and beginning birders. Each team is assigned to a pre-determined area of St. Paul. Individual participation can be for part of the day or all day depending on your interest. There is an option to watch and report on birdfeeder activity, just let our coordinator know what you prefer.
How to Sign Up: E-mail Julian Sellers (preferred) or call 651-698-5737 by Thursday, December 10th.
Please provide the following information:
- Telephone number
- e-mail address
- Mailing address
- Activity you’re interested in: lead, follow, or watch your feeders.
- Birding skill level: beginner, intermediate, or experienced
- State your preferred birding style: relaxed, focused, or intense
Our coordinator, Julian, will get back to you regarding your area and team leader.
Cost: $6 fee per field participant to help pay the costs of this massive data gathering effort—$5 to National Audubon and $1 to cover our chapter’s expenses. NOTE: There is no fee for feeder watchers or for field participants 18 years of age and younger.
At the end of the day, we’ll gather for a pot-luck supper and swap stories about the day’s highlights as we tally the species.
